Student-led computing shines brightly at Beam Primary School!

Beam Primary School were interested in finding a student-led solution for the computing curriculum. A top priority for the school was to find a solution that gave them the flexibility to use a selection of device types for different age groups and computing strands.

The Challenge

The teachers at Beam Primary School had a varied skill-set for computing. Likewise, different classes and students within classes had different ability levels. They needed to find a solution that could be easy to manage yet flexible enough to facilitate the variety of abilities and enable everyone to excel at a level that was right for them.

The Solution

The two stage 'journey' provided by Olus Education enabled the leadership at the school to focus initially on enabling the students to engage with computing curriculum through their choice of the best apps (e.g. Scratch, Canva, Google Workspace etc), on their preferred devices . Using Olus Education's student-led solution, the students were learn a high level of computing content while the teachers upskilled at their own pace.

The Results

This reduced planning time for teachers and was a source of stress relief. It provided a coherent whole-school plan for the leaders that they knew could be reliably delivered - with an assessment tool and progress recording to support it. The students got to experience independence and took agency of their own learning.

Response from the School

Part of my role is to research and understand the impact of computing across teaching and learning at the school. A key part of this is understanding the impact of our chosen devices and software options for different learning outcomes. One finding I'm happy to share is that the Olus Education portal has been incredibly impactful in every way a coordinator could hope for! It has supported our students to thrive with the computing curriculum, it has enabled our less confident teachers to provide a high level computing curriculum in their classrooms, and in general it has supported students and teachers across the school to use technology effectively for learning and teaching.

Shaun Samuels, Computing Coordinator

‘The Olus learning portal has been a fantastic resource for the students and staff at Beam Primary School. As the previous computing coordinator at Beam, I felt a huge responsibility to hand a steady, secure and progressive computing plan on to the new coordinator. With Olus I was able to do this, confident that the progress the school had made while I was coordinator would continue. As a Year 6 teacher I continue to use Olus and achieve great results with my students. In particular, as class teacher, I enjoy how the student portal enables independent, differentiated learning and enables me to provide more focused support for individual students in my class. The support I received for technical help and curriculum areas has been swift, personal and clear. I couldn't ask for a more comprehensive scheme.‘
